Mia stopped at the restaurant to have a glass of wine and people watch while waiting for a rainstorm to end; she was heading out when a gunman opened fire, mowing down her fellow patrons and sending her scrambling for cover, wounded and terrified. Much of the night is a blank to her, so she revisits the scene, hoping to jog her memory as she recreates the timeline of her evening and compares stories with others who were there — or lost loved ones to the terrorists. Though the film is fictional, it was inspired by the deadly violence Paris experienced in Ultimately, Revoir Paris reminds us that every victim of violence has an important story to tell and deserves the chance for it to be heard. When a date with her boyfriend Vincent Gregoire Colin ends early, Mia Virginie Elfira stops at a chic Paris bistro for a drink, unlucky to be on the scene of a horrific mass murder but fortunate to survive. Months later, unable to even remember exactly where she was and with whom as the bullets flew, she begins investigating the incident, bringing her close to other survivors like Thomas Benoit Magimel while deepening the gulf between her and her former life. A sudden outburst that lasted only minutes casts a long shadow.

The film never wallows in sentimentality or dwells in the violence leave it to the French to be so matter-of-fact about a mass shooting , instead grounding the narrative in an investigation of memory that plays like a quiet thriller of the mind. Out to dinner one evening, Vincent gets a supposedly urgent call from the office, leaving Mia to finish her half-eaten meal alone. Sitting alone with her glass of wine, Mia observes two girlish Japanese tourists giggling over their escargot, and makes eye contact with the smoldering birthday guy as he gives her a very French once-over. When she returns from the bathroom, rapid gunshots send everyone careening to the floor, as her fellow diners perish before her eyes.
