There are many social customs in Taiwan that differ greatly from the social customs in my home country, The United States. This is considered a chivalrous act toward women. It is also a way to publicly indicate a romantic relationship, in the same way that hand holding is an expression of a romantic bond between two people. American culture is full of external expressions of masculinity, like big muscles, the color blue, and meat eating. In Taiwan, masculinity seems to be defined very differently from my native culture. Based on my observations, it is the way a man handles himself under pressure, the way he endures hardship or challenge, that determines how manly he is. Masculinity in Taiwanese culture seems to be defined by inner strength and discipline, and not by outer accouterments.

He was great fun to talk to, and I was drawn to his complicated shyness: just awkward enough for it to be apparent, but not enough to stop him from ringing me up to have coffee. Apologies if I offend anyone. I am unclear as to whether or not hookup culture exists in Taiwan, or if most girls dating are presumably looking for a long term relationship. From my basic understanding of the culture, Asian culture stresses marriage and procreation but I am unsure how much of the population actually practices this. Long story short I met this girl online and we kicked it off. She continued to talk to me and I mentioned if she wanted to come over and watch Netflix with me one night, which she agreed.
