I was recently approached by a Muslim chaplain looking for resources for Muslim parents, parents trying to find positive ways for their families to move forward when their adult children choose life partners outside of their faith community. They fear intermarriage will not fit comfortably within the expectations of parents and the boundaries of their faith communities. I am a Roman Catholic immigrant to Canada from Germany living in Toronto and have been married to a Pakistani Muslim for close to 50 years. I am acutely aware of the potential difficulties that can arise in an interreligious marriage, especially when religious differences between spouses are compounded by racial and cultural differences. An Islamic marriage is established with a formalized marriage contract and consists of obligations, rights, and duties that the spouses have towards each other. Their example demonstrates the idea of soulmates exists in the Islamic framework and that the concept of marriage is a grounding and natural relationship—one that Allah Himself designed for people to have.

When Muslims Intermarry

There are a lot of Muslim men and women who do not consider dating to be something that they will do but this does not mean that it does not happen within the community. This is the truth. Muslims usually date when they are already seeking for people whom they are going to marry and stay with for a long period of time. This means that Muslim men and women do not get into very deep and intimate relationships wherein they already know so many facts about each other and they have shared a lot of moments together especially when they are alone.
