Short for Involuntary Celibate, it was popularised by men who appropriated the label for themselves. The Incel community is overwhelmingly male and growing and to be an Incel technically at least is to have not had sex for six months or more. As so the word has gradually crept into the vocabulary of every internet troll — partly I suspect because we still judge people by how much sex they have, or not in this case. Incels are therefore an easy target. For women it has begun to function as a putdown that ruthlessly dismisses unworthy suitors while simultaneously expelling them from the community of the good as misogynistic and creepy. In the past decade there has been a three-fold increase in the number of men who have not had sex in the past year. There is invariably some truth to this.

I'm married now, but were something to happen to my husband, I don't think I could stomach trying online dating again. Tinder was the one I chose, but I never went on a date with anyone I met. Then later that year, Bumble came out, and it was kinda revolutionary. By then, I'd heard about Hinge. I used them on and off through The 'marketplace for people' thing hasn't changed, but apps make it easier than actual dating sites to kind of view people as commodities on paper instead of people, because on sites, you have more opportunity to actually write as opposed to just answering prompts to go with pictures. I think it's easier to find people who are already in your extended friend network, which may lead to a better chance for success.
