LoginAudience Content. Dating shows — love them or hate them, they are a staple of the television landscape. Beginning in with American hit The Dating Game, which saw the likes of pre-fame Steve Martin and Farrah Fawcett as guests, the increase of reality TV at the turn of the century has transformed the way that these shows operate. What was once a game show format, often having a form of speed dating and perhaps at most some information on a first date, has turned into audiences following couples for weeks or months, both in the show, and then on social media once they leave. This means what was once a playful look into the dating lives of others, has changed into a way for people to launch themselves into stardom through social media following, but what does this mean for audiences? Countless reality television shows have popped up over the years. For decades, single people hoping to find their soulmate have turned to reality television for help, leading to rom-com worthy professions of love and unforgettable, dramatic confrontations. But, perhaps I'm being too hard on Jake. He simply latched onto but one of the many elimination-style reality show cliches we've come to know. Why, I've heard Bret Michaels, Tila Tequila and numerous no-name "reality stars" express that exact disbelief over actually having to deem one of the random freaks in front of them the so-called winner.
Hooked on Love Island? Fallen hard for First Dates? Beside yourself that Blind Date is back? I find it fascinating in this day and age that that still happens.
