LoginIt was from none other than the Walmart parking lot cart guy himself! After weeks of catching him stare at me every time I pulled up, he finally cleverly spilled his interest in me. But the bigger reason I said no was because of something much more important. And for that reason, I would never consider dating him. The question of whether a Christian should date a non-Christian has been circulating for centuries. Is dating okay? We have been bought with a price, and our life is no longer our own to run. In order to honor God in all that we do, we need to know what He thinks about us dating non-Christians.
Like many who grew up in the church, I was taught as a teenager that dating outside of my faith could only be damaging to me. At one point, I even signed a leadership agreement in my youth group that stated that I would not have a romantic relationship with anyone who was not a Christian. Interpretations of 2 Corinthians have a lot to answer for in this discussion. Although many who interpret the verse removed from its context perceive the message of the verse to be clear, a closer reading reveals a much more complicated picture.
And since dating is the first step toward marriage, it follows that Christians should not date non-Christians either. But many people think this is the ideal rather than the norm. I have met so many believers who—when times got tough or lonely—ditched that rule and started a relationship with an unbeliever. And sadly, that may be true, but being a Christian is about so much more than just being a moral person.
What does the Bible say about? Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness?
