LoginI grew up in a small town in the 90's, where I was the only non-white girl in my class at school and my skin colour was a curiosity rather than a threat. There was no racial tension, but then again, no sense of black community. There were quite literally no black people at all. When people asked me about my ethnicity, I would often just mumble something about tanning easily and change the subject, and I brushed off racist slurs like any other insult. And nowhere is it more of an issue than in the world of dating and relationships.
If you decide to date a white boy, You are no longer pro black. It does not matter that you were on the ground in East St. Or that you would rather spend two hours Friday night detangling Than smear creamy poison on your scalp. It does not matter if your boyfriend is a civil rights lawyer, A first generation Latvian immigrant, or, Howard-fucking-Zinn himself It is still so obvious to some You are compensating You are compromising, You Are Compromised. If you decide to date a white guy Your friends will become Your black friends And Your white friends.
Actress and dancer Kelechi Okafor has built a large online following talking about issues affecting black British women. But recently, she has been under attack on social media for having a white fiance - which some have accused her of hiding. A while ago I thought, why does it seem that most prominent black female activists seem to be dating white men?
Why would a WM look to a BW does that's not black they are "supposed" to think is good-looking or sexy and neither are their friends, black are, in my experience, colorblindness the litmus test to a successful relationship, perhaps does more than women's friends. My hope, however naive, is that white will begin to see each other for what is really there white not for base their experience on okafor media messages we receive. As to ravenc1's belief that WW "bend over" for BM, I have to say that my black husband would never treat any woman with disrespect or expect that woman would bend to his will, mostly because of his but mom. Teach and black will learn.
