LoginAbsolute dating also known as radiometric dating is based by the measurement of the content of specific radioactive isotopes of which the "half time" is known. Half time is the time needed for half of a given quantity of an isotope to decay in its byproducts. Comparing the quantity of the parent form and the byproduct will give a numerical value for the age of the material containing such isotopes. Example include carbonnitrogen, uranium-led, uranium-thorium. Relative dating instead allows for identifying the sequential order of geological events one relative to the other.
Not sure what you're looking for? Browse the A-Z index. Archaeologists have two main ways to tell the age of sites and artifacts. Relative dating tells how old something is in relation to other objects, but cannot provide a year or specific date of use. In contrast, absolute dating provides a specific calendar year for the occupation of a site. Relative dating considers how old artifacts and sites are, in comparison to other artifacts and sites. Stratigraphy and style are both used for relative dating.

Physical evidence of geological changes and the mineralized remains of living organisms fossils , as well as material remains and artifacts of human societies, offer archaeologists important insights into the past. Archaeologists seek to place discoveries within a broader historical framework; in other words, to get a sense for the time period that an object comes from and how it relates to other finds, times, and places in the archaeological record.
