There's another way, but it'll cost you. In best-case scenarios, thousands of dollars. In worst-case scenarios, your trust, self-esteem and even, as one Sydney woman discovered, your business. Dating or introductions agencies sell themselves as high-end services, with dedicated matchmakers who'll send you hand-picked, bespoke matches, based on extensive questionnaires and a database of "high-calibre" suitors who "won't be seen on dating apps". Some unhappy customers report paying thousands of dollars for inappropriate matches. Others have claimed traditional introductions agencies are a far superior way of dating than using online apps.

With so many ways to meet a prospective partner for free it might seem strange that expensive introduction agencies still exist at all. From internet dating to smartphone apps such as Tinder, which links up to your Facebook account, or even just chatting people up in the pub on Saturday nights, there are a multitude of inexpensive ways to try and find love. However Berkeley International is unashamedly bucking the trend.

I joined quite a large dating agency three years ago, two years after I broke up with my husband, and I was given the whole glossy brochure treatment with a couple on the cover looking incredibly in love. They promised to find me my perfect match, and wanted to know what my interests were, how far I'd want to travel and all sorts. But none of my matches had nothing even remotely in common with me. One man they set me up with lived over three hours away by car which was unfeasible.

I've been doing OLD on and off for years; when I was a bit younger, I used to get a few dates out of it, but since hitting 40, I've come nowhere near the date stage. I can't find any men on these platforms who want to have a normal relationship with a woman near to their own age, it's all "casual fun" and "not looking for anything serious".
