LoginVeteran Apogee leader Anna Kaplan of Princeton, New Jersey, is an experienced outdoors-woman, an EMT, a fantastic older sister, and the proud daughter of two loving parents. In addition to playing music, Anna also has a blast broadcasting music on a weekly radio show for the Tufts freeform station. Anna is in a five year program at Tufts University, majoring in Biology with the goal of finishing her fifth year with a Masters in Public Health from Tufts School of Medicine in Anna is fun, charming, and connects wonderfully with kids — a skill that she honed after her summer working as a camp counselor in New York in at the same camp she attended for six years as a camper. Anna has taken summer college courses at the College of New Jersey, worked as a lifeguard and swim instructor, and even made time to hike miles of the Appalachian Trail from Gorham, New Hampshire, to Rangeley, Maine. Anna was an amazing addition to the Apogee team last year on our Vermont to Montreal trips. This year, Anna is not only looking forward to riding through Big Sky country but is also excited to create WhisperLite culinary masterpieces with her students on our Montana Service Adventure trip! Freddy recently returned from a stellar semester abroad in South Africa, encountering new wildlife, climates and cultures.
The American Heart Association just hosted a lovely luncheon on May 12, to raise much needed funds for their mission. I must say, the event did not disappoint. It was a sold out crowd and full of patrons in beautiful red. Red definitely looks good on most! My friends Anna Kaplan and Cortney Cole were hosts of the event.
Sometimes the name says it all. The win was the culmination of nearly a decade spent playing lacrosse with her friends while being coached by her mother, Courtney Kaplan, who first started coaching Anna when she was in third grade. After playing with non-stop hustle for the entirety of the district final, Anna scored the game-winning goal off a penalty shot with 19 seconds to go and finished with a team-high in goals four and assists five. Twin Valley went on to advance to the PIAA Class 2A final — becoming the first BCIAA school, boys or girls, to reach a state championship game — before falling to Archbishop Carroll in a game where Kaplan scored two of her team-high three goals in a second span to give the Raiders an second-half lead. Despite missing a season due to the COVID pandemic, Kaplan finished her Berks girls lacrosse career tied for second with teammate Emma Raines in all-time points and second in all-time assists The draw specialist recorded a league-leading points in on 69 goals and 76 assists, and is the all-time assist leader in Twin Valley girls lacrosse history.
Kaplan is the first Iranian-American to be elected to either of New York state's legislative chambers [3] and she is the first former political refugee to serve in the New York Senate. Kaplan was born to an Iranian Jewish family in Tabriz , Iran , [5] and raised in Tehran , where her father was a carpet dealer. Kaplan started her political career as a member of the North Hempstead Town Board in , and served until her election to the state senate. On January 11, , Kaplan announced that she would run for the seat in the United States House of Representatives for New York's 3rd congressional district being vacated by retiring congressman Steve Israel. She was also a member of the Legislative Women's Caucus.
