LoginIt was important to get it right. I had just watched a screener the last 10 minutes of which were kept from reviewers, for spoilers and needed to share the incomprehensible bizarrity of what I had just consumed. Also, no one knows what the proposer looks like until we whittle everyone down to the final two contestants. Clearly, I did not manage to communicate all this in my explanation, because the person I was speaking to did not look confused or shocked. Last night, I finally watched the premiere episode of The Proposal in its entirety — not because the show is so wonderful, but because I had to confirm if my memories were correct or not.
Better Date Than Never is an Australian dating show featuring a diverse cast of individuals who are taking their first steps into the dating world. Season 1 featured castmates Dianne and Charles who captured the trepidatious journey of dating as newly self-anointed Queer people. Charles has been living in Australia for a few years and is doing a PhD in environmental engineering, focusing on the benefit of algae against climate change. He captured a relatable energy when it came to the anxiety of dating and I wondered if we would get any insights into the difficulties of Queer Asian dating. The cynic in me was eager to see if the show could maintain its rose-coloured premise with Charles, or were the difficulties of the Sydney Queer scene going to serve as a harsh wake-up call to the producers? Fortunately, with some experience under his belt, Charles is returning for the second season of Better Date Than Never to continue his search for romance.
Dating shows are usually brutal. This season we follow seven people across Australia on their quest for love — or to keep their love going, in the case of Liv from Season 1.
Just short of sending contestants hopeful for love out on national TV in jumbo guinea pig wheels, tirelessly running and spinning until someone Or at least boil it down to its barest bones. Or at least, having accepted a "proposal" that they get drinks together later in the week? I've now watched two episodes of the show — you're welcome — and, look, it was hard work.
